Hi there! This past weekend we had a few friends over for a bbq for the first time in months and we had such a good time! It was so nice to see our friends in person rather than over a computer screen. One of the gals was admiring the curtains in our living/dining room; at one window they’re really long, specifically 12.25 feet. She asked me how I made them so long, and when I told her she was impressed and suggested I make the curtains the topic of my next blog post. So here I am doing that!
These curtains appear at two windows in the living room/dining area, which is one big room— first up are the living room curtains, here:
These curtains are placed several inches above the window. I bought four 108″ curtains off the shelf for this window and put two curtains on each side. They were at Bed Bath and Beyond years ago. They have grommets that you put the curtain rod through, and the fabric is like a nubby basket weave. The color is an off white. These curtains are purely decorative as we have wood blinds on the windows. If we need to darken the room or need privacy we just close the blinds.
Here are the longer curtains:
So how did I make the extra long curtains? Easy— I bought a total of eight curtains off the shelf for this window. I wanted the width to be two panels on each side, but the total length needed to be 147″. (If you want to know how to measure your windows for curtains check out this article, here.) So for each panel I cut off the grommet section of a 63″ panel and sewed it onto the bottom of an 84″ panel with the grommets. I didn’t want the seams to show, so I made sure the top curtains were just long enough to hit the tie back hardware. You don’t really notice the seam— here’s what it looks like:
Doing it this way is WAY less expensive than purchasing custom drapes– and all you need to do is be able to sew a straight seam. If you don’t have a sewing machine, you could bring the curtains to a seamstress and get it done for real cheap. Or bring it to your local dry cleaners shop that does alterations– they could do it too! And another idea is you could get fusing tape and iron on the curtains to attach them!
I have had these curtains in place for YEARS, and I LOVE them– since they’re white and a simple style they’ll never go out of style.
