Hi there! I’m back after my little vacation. Do you save special occasion cards from your loved ones? Do you have a way to organize them?
I couldn’t part with the ones my husband and I received from our grown kids and each other— they’re so sweet!
Here’s a poem my husband wrote me for our 30th anniversary last November; it was inside a beautiful card. Of COURSE I have to save this! (Whenever Ron asks me what I want for special occasions I always say, ‘write me a poem!’ So now I’ve got dozens of poems from him– all simple but super cute. They’re always accompanied by a sentimental card. They make me happy!)
After I display these cards in the family room for a few days, I throw them in a basket in a spot beside the living room couch that was kind of hidden. After many years of collecting, the basket looked like this.
I’m actually a pretty organized person, so when my husband recently saw this basket overflowing with cards in a haphazard manner, he was kind of baffled. He said, in a surprised voice, “Honey, there’s got to be a better way to organize those cards!”
It was then that I noticed them all askew. Do you have places in your home that are unorganized, sometimes for years, because you’re blind to them? That was ME!! I’d never truly SEEN the mess these cards made until my husband’s comment.
So I decided to find a way to organize them. I knew I needed a container or two, so I did a search on Etsy. (Etsy is a website where you can find items made by individual businesses) I figured the crafty site would have what I was looking for, and it didn’t disappoint!
I did a search for ‘acid free greeting card box’ and this is what came up. A couple weeks later I had my boxes— one for my husband Ron, and one for me. They came with blank plastic dividers, so I could label them myself.
Yesterday I spent a few hours going through the cards while watching a movie. I got out my trusty label maker and made some labels.
Here’s what the boxes look like after being labeled. Cool beans, huh?
And after being filled with the cards.
I wanted to personalize the box, so I cut some scrapbook paper to fit the top, and had my daughter Jenna label them ‘Ron’s Cards’ and ‘Cheri’s Cards’ using her beautiful calligraphy.
If you don’t have a calligrapher near by, you could use a word processor and print labels onto a clear adhesive label in a pretty font to get the same effect. Or you could just hand letter the labels. I painted some Mod Podge on top of the scrapbook paper to reinforce it and, tada, the boxes are decorated! And best of all, it’s MUCH easier to find those sentimental cards and poems now.

Great post-Cheri, This is a wonderful idea. I have a few small table drawers stuffed with special cards from my husband. It would be such smart and special to organize them, maybe even by year since we have almost been married 35 years! Thanks for your wonderful ideas.
